The House of Famiglia Correale

At the entrance of Via Santa Maria della Pieta' we can appreciate one of the houses which, together with others, made up a kind of small hamlet of the nobles from Sorrento in the heart of the town.
Starting from Tasso Square, at the entrance of Via Santa Maria della Pietà (in the past known as Vico Bagnagatte), on the left-hand side, we can appreciate one of the so many houses belonged to Family Correale who were also the owners of the facing palace, known as Casa Grande.
Right to distinguish it from the other buildings they were owners of, the Correales, in a not very fanciful way, renamed the one lying in Via Santa Maria della Pietà as “Casa piccola” that is to say “Small House”.
Actually together with others, ended up with making up a small hamlet of the noble family from Sorrento, inside the old town centre of Sorrento, as an evidence of the wealth which had begun at the time of the Angevins and Durazzos, thanks to the considerable donations by the royal family.
Right because considered as Casa Piccola, this small palace, in the past, did not enjoy the same attentions its owners gave to the more prestigious and opulent “Casa Grande”. This one had also the characteristic to overlook the old square Piazza del Castello.
Also for this reason the so-called “Casa Piccola” was characterized by the presence of architectural particulars which, though interesting, are less significant that those which, on the contrary, make the other houses of the Correales precious.
At present, however, the building develops on three floors. Its main façade is essential and has a very simple aspect.
The entrance portal, in fact, is framed by a piperno round arch which does not have any relevant elements. At its sides, in the past there were the so-called shallows.
On its top floors we can admire three small balconies which, nevertheless, are of a more recent making.
The hall is made up of three barrel-vaulted places, which let in an unpretentious uncovered courtyard having a quadrangular shape; on its left there is a barrel-vaulted staircase and on its corner on the right there is a small roofed passage where there was a vaulted washtub, still visible now.
