Sorrento & Folklore - A popular, yet genuine way of displaying a picturesque Sorrento
The legends and typcial traditions of Sorrento, and popular cultural events of the Land of Syrens have become the expression of a Folklore that evokes a lot of intense emotion for those who are fortunate to see one of them.
Think, for example, the warmth and joy that you can experience when able to watch the performance of a “Tarantella”, harmoniously accompanied by the music of the same name opera from Rossini, aside from other adapted musical pieces from famous composers such as Listz, Chopin, Tchaikowsky among others.
A humble but very cheerful and colorful event where everyone involved can follow the frenetic tambourines, where synergy is the main goal of all dancers and musicians participating.
Another quite traditional folkloric manifestation, with a very ancient background, is Easter and its processions, filling the atmosphere of the Sorrentine Peninsula with misticism. Remembering the Christianity passages, and especially the ones of Easter and Christ Ressurection with processions of hundreds of hooded men carrying and following the statue of Jesus and the Madonna and bringing to light the churches that remain open during the whole procession. Spectators from all over come to reaffirm their devotion to the religion or to celebrate Easter.
Aside from this, always and at anytime of the year, many are the tales that are spreaded throughout the town that carry fascination as the stories of the Syrens, Queen Giovanna's erotic adventures or even tales regarding the daily life of the fisherman's village of Marina Grande.
This is the way to appreciate the Sorrentine Folklore: a unique, authentic place where reality and dream merge and become unforgettable.
