Among the specialties offered by the nature of the Sorrento Coast, nuts have a special place. To them, in the past, were attributed divine origins. That is why they were thrown at the spouses as a good wish. This fruit has many qualities.
Nuts are among the typical local fruits, thanks to them the Land of the Sirens is famous since the past.
They had, according to people, the most varied meanings, but, however, they had a mythological meaning.
It can sound strange, but – in ancient times – nuts were thrown to the groom and to the bride (instead of rice) as a good wish and as propitiatory symbol of fertility.
During the Roman era, instead, the same nuts were alternatively considered near the Gods of Hades or as a gift of Jupiter.
Apart from the legends, however, the tasty fruit had credit of being healing. It’s not a case that the Romans extracted a scented oil that was used for medicinal purposes.
Nuts, actually, have qualities that make them very useful under the diet profile, that they can be compared to a sort of “elixir of life”. Recent studies, indeed, have shown that the quantity of mineral salts and vitamins (and so, antioxidants) in them are ideal to fight the skin ageing process and the cells one.
Not only the physical aspect can enjoy the positive effects of nuts, since the fat contained in these fruits allows to reduce in a significant way the so-called “bad” cholesterol of the blood.
Considered delicious and tasty food mostly in the Christmas period, they start to ripen in the month of September, but they are harvested in a subsequent time.
Particularly tasty, these nuts are not only ideal as dried fruit but they reveal themselves as delicious food for the preparation of several kinds of sauces, to make even more exquisite some types of cheese and mostly to prepare the “nocino”, very ancient aromatic liquor with appreciated digestive qualities which takes its origins from the same ancient traditions.
Thanks to these traditions, today, you can appreciate another typical Sorrento delight: the limoncello.
